“We can always get $20 together for a haircut but it just means that we won't eat that day."

When you’re hungry, scared, and don’t know where you’ll be sleeping, your appearance isn’t a high priority.

People experiencing homelessness in South Australia now have access to Short Back & Sidewalks, with the first service delivered at Vinnies Men's Crisis Centre in Adelaide on Monday November 28.

Volunteers from Maison Jacquet salon spent the morning making positive connections with nearly 20 people as they cut their hair.

“The work we do is about more than just a haircut, it’s an opportunity to connect with a human being,” said founder and CEO Craig Hollywood.

“It could be the confidence boost someone needs to apply for accommodation or for a job.”

South Australian State Manager, Sam Aghdam attended the service and spent the morning connecting with the clients.

“I spoke with so many amazing people that have been through a fair bit,” he said.

“We often judge people and make a lot of assumptions without knowing anything about their stories.

“I think everyone should be exposed to this sort of activity to chat, listen and build connections.”

This new service will run monthly at Vinnies Men's Crisis Centre in Adelaide.
Thanks to our partnership with evo and access to their 2000+ salons in South Australia, SBSW is planning on expanding out to more locations and more frequent services in Adelaide.
